How to Ride the Bus in Otaru

Some of the popular tourist attractions such as the Otaru Aquarium and 
Mt. Tengu are a short bus ride away. Here's a quick guide to riding 
the bus in Otaru since it may be different from your country.

  Gate Information  


              Gate 1:  ・Express Bus to Sapporo via Maruyama 
                               (to JR Sapporo Station or Shiroi Koibito Park)

              Gate 2:  ・Express Bus to Sapporo via Hokkaido University
                            ・Asarigawa Onsen

              Gate 3:  ・ Otaru Aquarium
                             ・Shukutsu

              Gate 4:  ・Otaru Stroller's Bus 
                                  (canal, Sakaimachidori Shopping Street)
                            ・Tenguyama Ropeway

              Gate 5:  ・Yoichi
                            ・Bikuni
                            ・Shakotan
                            ・Cape Kamui

              Gate 6:  ・Niseko
                            ・ Kutchan
                            ・Iwanai


   FARE   

Within the city - 220 yen per ride 

       (some exclusions apply, e.g., some destinations in the Asarigawa Onsen 
        area are 330 yen per ride. Please inquire at the bus terminal or with the 
        bus driver.)

       You can pay by:
                   ・ IC CARD (e.g. Suica, Pasmo, Sapica, Kitaca, etc.)
                   ・ CASH
                   ・ TICKET
                   ・ ONE DAY BUS PASS (within the designated area of the city)

For reference, ONE-WAY fares for destinations outside Otaru City:
                  ・Sapporo Station 610 yen
                  ・Shiroi Koibito Park (get off at Nishimachi Kita 20 Chome) 600 yen
                  ・Yoichi 430 yen
                  ・Cape Kamui 1,780 yen
                  ・Niseko 1,430 yen
            *One Day Bus Pass does not apply to destinations outside the city


   Buying a TICKET  

TICKETS can be purchased at Chuo Bus Terminal outside JR Otaru Station
             
from the ticket machine or Information window



  ONE DAY BUS PASS   

ONE DAY PASS:  750 yen
Allows unlimited usage (within the designated area) and
can be purchased at the following locations

                       ・ Chuo Bus Terminal outside JR Otaru Station
                       ・ Canal Terminal (Ogasawara Photos)
                       ・ Canal Plaza
                       ・ On board any Otaru City Bus

One Day Bus Pass Applicable Area


   Getting ON and OFF the Bus   

When the bus is approaching, make sure you are getting on the right bus by confirming the bus number and destination before boarding.

--- Getting ON the bus ---

               If you are paying your fare by 
                   ・ IC CARD - hold your card up to the sensor right by the door



                   ・ cash, ticket, or one day pass - simply get on (within the city)

         
--- Getting OFF the bus --- 

Press the button when your stop is announced and 
displayed at the front of the bus.


   
   Paying Your Fare   

IC CARD:  Place your card on the sensor when getting ON and OFF the bus 
                (The fare will be automatically deducted from your card)


CASH: Insert the exact fare into the fare box when getting OFF
          (Please pay the exact amount as change will not be given. If you do 
          not have exact change, there is a change machine just below the 
          fare box. Please note it simply exchanges the coin/bill into smaller 
          denominations so you will need to place your fare into the fare box 
          after the exchange.)


TICKET: Drop your ticket into the fare box when getting OFF

ONE DAY BUS PASS: Show the driver your pass with the date clearly visible 
                                when getting OFF
