Manhole Cards are collection cards which were made for having fun and to create an interest in sewage system at the same time.

It is the photo of Manhole Cover on the front and written about Information on Origin of Design on the back. 

There are about 15 million manhole covers and about 12000 kinds manhole cover designs in Japan.

Japanese manhole cover designs are different by each municipality. They are famous places, products, sports, characters and so on.

Manhole Cards are distributed by each municipality.

Otaru manhole card started to be distributed in 2017.

The motifs of design are the scenery of Otaru Canal from Asakusa Bridge and the gaslights that color walking path beside Otaru Canal.

Hanachozu ~Flower hand water〜

Hanachozu~Flower hand water 


Have you seen Hanachozu?

Hanachozu (Flower hand water) is the decoration that floated colourful flowers on the Chozu of a Shinto shrine and the temple.
Chozu is the water for washing your hands and rinsing your mouth to purify before approaching the shrine.



You can see beautiful Hanachozu in Sumiyoshi Shrine.
It has been exhibited since July 4 and changed Flowers every 10 days.

  2. 7/14~7/23 Phalaenopsis (the language of flowers:bring happiness)
  3. 7/24~8/3 Sunflower (the language of flowers:adoration)
  4. 8/4~8/13 Hydrangea (the language of flowers:patience)
  5. 8/14~8/23 The Flower is undecided.

CANCELED: 54th Otaru Ushio Festival

CANCELED: "54th Otaru Ushio Festival"


The 54th Annual Ushio Festival that was scheduled to be held on 
July 24-26, 2020, has been CANCELED due to the novel coronavirus.



Even though the festival is canceled, you can still get a sense of it from home!
You can listen to the Ushio Ondo song that is played for the festival's main event, the Ushio Nerikomi dancing parade, or you can watch people dancing together on Zoom. If you'd like, you can even learn the dance yourself by watching the
tutorial video (only in Japanese) and join one of the Zoom dance sessions!

The Former SUHARA Mansion

The Former SUHARA Mansion



This building was built by Naoji takahashi, the dealer in cereals who is famous for adzuki bean shogun in 1912.
Sotokichi Suhara ,the businessman owned in 1926 and Suhara Family donated it to Otaru City in 1986.
It was designated as a Historic Landmarks of Otaru City in 1991.

and 8-minute walk 



It is located to the north of Suitengu Shrine.
