Making Wax Bowl

Hi, how are you?

Have you ever heard "Wax Bowl"?

Wax Bowl is quite important thing for our winter event, "Otaru Snow Light Path".

It is a kind of Candle Pot made from wax.

During this event, lots of this Wax Bowl are placed along each lighting path.

I did try making this Wax Bowl with my friends. Volunteers taught us how to make it.

First, do you know what are there in this huge pot?

Actually, this is melted wax which is around 70 degrees.

Let's put the balloon of water!

After repeating for 15 minutes, it becomes thick layers of wax.

Remove the balloon by cutting, cut the mouth of wax bowl to make its look better.

And then put beautiful pressed flowers on the surface of Wax Bowl and coat with melted wax by brush.

We got finished!!

I lit up it at my house.

Lovely isn't it?

The snow came on in Otaru.

I'll introduce you about four main venues of

"Otaru Snow Light Path"

(小樽雪あかりの路)

★★★Four Main Venues★★★

☆1. Temiya Railway Venue

Access: 5 minutes walk from JR Otaru station.

◆There are many kinds of snow statues such as snow slide, snow tunnel, Ice bar, and so on. Also you can get official goods of this event at this venue. Many volunteers will let you know how to make WAX BOWL here.(Wax Bowl is a kind of special candle for this event.)

☆2. Canal Venue

Access: 10 minutes walk from JR Otaru station.

◆I think the scene of this venue is the most famous because lots of guide book, postcards, leaflets and posters use the picture of Canal Venue. Several hundreds of Floating Glass Candles are floated on the surface of the canal by volunteers. It's amazing view.

☆3. Mt.Tengu Venue

Access: 20 minutes by bus from JR Otaru station bus terminal. 5 minutes to the mountain top by ropeway. Bus fare 210yen. Ropeway fare 1,100yen. Bus#9, Gate#3.

◆One of attractions of Mt.Tengu is the heart shaped tree.

☆4. Asarigawa Onsen Venue

Access: 30 minutes by bus from JR Otaru station bus terminal. Bus fare 320 yen. Bus#13, Gate#2.

◆A number of candles are lit up along the Asari river. Asarigawa Onsen is a hot spring area in Otaru. During this event, you can get 100 yen discount for bathing charge by our official guide book. Lots of facilities have this guide book, please don't forget to get it for your visit.

What is "Otaru Snow Light Path"?

"Otaru Snow Light Path" is took place at many places in Otaru city.

There are four main venues that the canal which has supported the development of Hokkaido, The Japan's third railway-The former Temiya Railway, one of the three best nightscapes in Hokkaido-Mt.Tengu, and Asarigawa Onsen area with hot spring and ski resort.

In frigid February, lots of volunteers (not only local people but also many foreign volunteers) take part in this event to make Otaru city romantic by candle light and snow arts with warm hearts.

One of sights you should see is several hundred of floating glass candles on the surface of the canal.

These glass balls were used for herring fishery in previous times.

We will get this event started with opening ceremony and during the period, many kinds of events are held at each venues.

I'll introduce them in derail by little and little.

Finally, Otaru's winter romantic event, "Otaru Snow Light Path" will be held from tomorrow for 10 days!!

So far, we has not made maps of other languages but, this year we made them ourselves in English, Koren and Chinese.

There are four main venues, I introduced about the access etc simply.

Otaru Craft Beer

"Otaru craft beer" brewery stands along the canal.

It takes about 15 minutes by walk from JR Otaru station.

I visited there with my coworkers and enjoyed many kinds of craft beer.

When I came in the restaurant of Otaru beer, I felt like I was in foreign country.

Otaru craft beer is made in German process and their restaurant imaged Germany.

Not only beer, but also foods such as sausages, roasted pork, pizza, pasta. paella ...etc, were amazing!!

I got coasters (above picture), put them together, they become a picture !

Their products can be purchased at lots of places in Otaru city.

Hello, Lotus Leave's Ice again!

Only on quite freezing day, we can see fantastic canal.

We happened to see "Hasuha Gori" on the surface of canal.

"Hasuha" means leave of lotus and "Gori" means ice.

So, it means the ice which is shaped like leave of lotus.

It's rarely to appear.

We were lucky !!

After the Xmas event, Canal Plaza got a beautiful booth.

This is a corner of Canal Plaza, 15 pictures are displayed on its wall.

These pictures were presented by a photographer, Mr. Okada.

He has been taking Otaru's pictures from every angle since a few decades ago.

His photo exhibition was held at Canal Plaza before, and it was quite popular among many visitors.

Lots of local people yearned after their old days with these pictures.

I think that old pictures are interesting for us who don't know the old Otaru as well.

We can find a lot of things such as old fashion, buildings, streets, old letter's signboard...etc.

If you are interested in old pictures, how about get them?

You can purchase them at Canal Plaza too.

There is a cafe named "1 banko cafe" which sells original pictures for 1,500yen each⇊

It's must be fun to just choose your favorite one from all kinds of pictures.

Snowy everyday

It has been snowing this winter and the average maximum temperature is around minus 2 degrees.

Otaru tourism association's staffs clear away snow around Canal Plaza and our office everyday.

Don't forget to wear warm jacket, groves, scarf and knit cap, when you visit Otaru!!

This is one of my work place, Canal Plaza. (Located just 10 minutes from JR Otaru station.)

After you enter the Canal Plaza, a big door will catch your eyes

and, this is one of my favorite place of Canal Plaza.

Look at the behind of the door ↓↓

There is a large courtyard.

This courtyard is surrounded by stone warehouses.

About 100 years ago, warehouse staff kept cargoes at this courtyard once, and then they put them into each warehouses.

It was best place to block outside eyes from customer's cargoes.

Recently, staffs of Otaru Tourism Association are planning to make something interesting here for visitors.

This courtyard is deeply covered with snow every year, so we wanna make Kamakura(Snow hut), snow slide and so on, like play ground.

I spent with my family and have eaten a lot... must have put on weight...:

Anyway,

This is the Year of Dragon in Chinese astrology.

Japanese people know their animal symbols of their birth year and celebrate the new year with the animal symbol every year.

For example, we draw the animal symbol on new year's greeting cards with message and doll of animal symbol is displayed in our house.

You can find lots of animal symbol's products in Japan around new year's day.

Otaru is famous for Glass, so we can see many kinds of glass work of animal symbol as well.

We don't have details of this event yet, but surely Otaru becomes romantic during this term, because lots of candles are put everywhere in our town, on the surface of Otaru canal too.

I will introduce one of ski resorts in Otaru today.

There are three ski resorts in Otaru, and one of them "Asari Ski Area" offers many convenient and special pricing plans for visitors.

Actually, this ski area is located in the center of Onsen (Hot spring) area.

They has lots of courses which are named in color names, like "Purple course", "Green course", "Red course" and so on. That's easy to find out on the ski resort map :)

In addition, there are other facilities, such as "Kids park", "Cross country skiing course", "Snow park", etc.

"Kids park" was set up for children, as its name suggests, to enjoy sledding and playing in the snow.

"Snow park" was opened from this season. There are some special slopes.

Free direct bus service!

This is a great information for visitors to Otaru!!

From 21st of December, free direct bus will run 2 times a day, 5 days every week, from New Chitose Airport to some hotels in Otaru.

This bus needs to be reserved by 4 days before your staying, but really convenient.

You don't need to worry about access right after your arrival at the airport.

How to make a booking

①Download a application form from the web site of Otaru Tourism Association.

②Fill in the form.

③Fax it to your staying hotel.

④Get a fax back as a confirmation.

⑤That's all!!

Have you ever heard "Stamp rally game"?

We call this game just "Stamp rally".

I don't know why but, often this kind of stamp rally game is held in Otaru.

For example, in our holding event, "Otaru Long Xmas" has "Romantic Stamp Rally".

Lots of shops, restaurants, hotels etc join this game.

If you use these facilities, each staff will stamp on your stamp form. If you collect 5 stamps, you'll be able to try the lot at Canal Plaza.

You might get special gift!

I made English leaflet and map for this game.

When you come to Otaru, please feel free to visit tourist information center and ask about these leaflets.

Xmas limited menu!

I introduced before but, now we're having a event named "Otaru Long Xmas".

During this event, we can enjoy special limited menu at some sushi restaurants.

I went to "Fuji-sushi restaurant" on Sakaimachi street with my coworkers.

We ordered...

It's saying "Xmas roll 950yen"

We really enjoyed it and other Japanese food.

This Xmas sushi roll is crab, tuna, squid and salmon are rolled with rice and egg like a crepe.

Salmon roe is on the top of them.

Looks yummy, isn't it??

After snowfall...

Snowy days recently in Otaru.

One of our important works is...

removing the snow from the floating glass tree.

(He is our staff, Mr. Miura.)

He removes the snow using a special tool.

(It is normal broom just tied with a pole :))

Usually he seems to do it around 2pm.

He said "After the heavy snow, I clear the snow around this tree as well!"

He's funny :)

When you come to Otaru, please make sure it and if you'd like to try removing the snow, he might show you how to do it ☆

Floating Glass Ball Tree

Hello, how are ya?

Now, we have a special event, "Otaru Long Xmas" until Christmas day. (too long ? :-P)

During this event every night, a beautiful glass tree is turned on (4pm-12pm) in front of Canal Plaza.

It was made from about 300 floating glass balls.

Actually, these glass balls are used for the another event, named "Otaru Snow Light Path".

Do you know how they are used?

We put candles into the glass balls and float them on the surface of canal.

These glass balls are really loved by many people.

Have fun this pretty glass ball tree!!

First Snowfall

When I walked from JR Otaru station to our company, I saw beautiful rail way with snow this morning.

Lots of leaflets started out from Otaru to across Hokkaido today! The leaflet is ... ↓↓ The winter event named "Otaru Long Christmas" is held on November 11 to December 25 in Otaru. Otaru city will be pretty romantic during this event. I hope these leaflets do public relations for this event very well :) Gor for it!! I'll post about the details of this event later...C ya!

He is holding a unique ornament, looks soooo heavy! However, actually...!!?? It is really light enough for us to carry by one finger :) These ornaments are made from woods and we can see them at Hotel VIBRANT OTARU. This hotel stands on "Northern Wall Street", built in 1923. This building was used as a bank in the old days and designated as one of Otaru's historic buildings in 1991. It received "Otaru Townscape Award" in 1996 as well. Otaru's historic buildings have purple explanation boards in front of themselves like this. Would you like to feel old atmosphere at Northern Wall Street??

Hello, how are you? Yesterday, one of my Otaru friends told me that there is a beautiful monument near tourist information center in Asakusa bridge. He said, "That monument shines iridencently! You don't know?". I couldn't believe him first, but I went to the place he told me immediately. I found it! Surely there was a unique form monument having a shining part. It's located only 3 minutes walk from our tourist information, in front of Hotel VIBRANT OTARU. The thing is ...↓ I asked Ms.Takato (Tourist information staff) about the detail. Otaru city confers "Otaru Townscape Award" on scenic points, buildings and so on. This monument is one of them, "Otaru Summer Festival" received it in 1990. Lots of facilities received this award have memorial green plate same as above picture. When you stroll in Otaru city, it might be interesting to look for these plates with your strolling:)

Moutain climbing @ Shioya Maruyama(塩谷丸山)

Hello, how are you? Fine days recently in Otaru. I enjoyed mountain climbing with Ms.Yoshida and Ms.Kasahara. The place is ... "Shioya Maruyama"（塩谷丸山）. This mountain course is for beginners and easy to go to the entrance of it. We went there by cay but JR train is also convenience. The closest JR train station is "Shioya(塩谷)" station. It takes about 10 minutes by JR train from JR "Otaru" station. Wow! I found a Japanese grass lizard at JR Shioya station. He was just 10cm in length, so cute :) After getting off the train, there're some signboards to the entrance. Please don't forget to fill in climbing book for climbers before going. Each three tourist information center has this course map. We're waiting for you in Otaru!! :)

Musical day in Otaru

Hello, how are you? I'll introduce beautiful day in Otaru. A musical event will be held on Oct 19th, named "Onza nama live Otaru"(音座なまらいぶ小樽). On this day, 15 facilities (cafe, bar, restaurants etc) will become clubs with live music. One of them is "Canal Plaza"!!95 bands 345 musicians will join this event and starts at 2pm. You don't need to pay any admission fee but most of these facilities are usually restaurants, so they'll be glad for your order. I was surprised yesterday. One of our staffs told me that salmons are going up the Otaru Canal. In autumn, we can see salmons at many rivers in Hokkaido however, it was my first time to see salmons at Otaru Canal. I could see a few salmons from the Asakusa bridge. Hello, how are you?? Otaru became gradually cold. I'll introduce a tree which becomes beautiful in autumn. Have you ever seen this tree? We call it "Nanakamado"(ナナカマド) in Japanese and English name is "Rowan tree". "Nana" means "Seven" and "Kamado" means "Oven" in Japanese. The origin of this name is that this tree doesn't burn even if you put it into the oven seven times. That is how much "Rowan tree" is strong. In autumn, rowanberry turns red. I'll show you after changing the color again :)

Otaru Rakan no Tera (Luohan's temple)

After "Shusenkan"(酒泉館), we visited "Souenji"(宗圓寺) temple. It's located on the hill, we enjoyed the view first and saw a cute image on the stairs. Soenji temple has beautiful garden around itself. This temple is called "Rakan no tera"(らかんの寺) (means Luohan's temple. "Luohan" is a kind of saint in Buddha.) You can see 500 statues of "Luohan" here. It's not allowed to take pictures in this temple so, this is a leaflet. This temple was completed about 400 years ago in Hakodate and about 100 years ago, it's moved to Otaru. In addition, it's registered as a tangle cultural asset of Hokkaido. It might be complicated to pay homage at Japanese temple for tourists from foreign countries. So, I'll let you know how to do it. 1. Bow your head to the main temple 2. Bow your head in front of the offertory box 3. Throw some coins into the offertory box 4. Press your hand together and pray 5. Bow your head in front of the offertory box again 6. Bow your head to the main temple again. We felt that we got marvelous power :) Would you like to feel it?? One of my recommended spots for scenery in Otaru is "Shukutsu"(祝津) area. This area has amazing sea view. I visited there to have lunch and take a bath as a aday trip. We arrived at "Hotel Neuscholoss Otaru". It took about 20 minutes by car from JR Otaru station. We enjoyed beautiful sea view from parking area. "Hotel Neusholoss Otaru" has many kinds of lunch menus and you can enjoy them with lovely scenery. If you order a meal which is over 1,000 yen, you'll be able to take hot spring at 400 yen for half price. Or, If you order over 2,500yen's menu, you can enjoy hot spring for free. The Sake Museum "Shusenkan"

Have you ever heard "Kitanohomare"(北の誉)?? "Kitanohomare" is a kind of Otaru's local sake. I went to the museum of Sake, "Shusenkan"(酒泉館) with Ms.Yoshda and Ms.Kasahara. Right flag is saying "Established 1901". The big round stuff was hung on the roof of the entrance. It seems to be a talisman. Sometimes we can see it at the entrance of old building. There were lots of jar for sake and old posters. Miniatures show us the process of sake making. They sell many kinds of sake, you can try limited local sake, seasonal sake and "Kitanohomare". Would you like it as a souvenir? If you'd like to visit sale brewery, please ask staffs. Final summer firework!

Otaru had lots of firework displays this summer, and the final fireworks will be held on Sep 3rd at Shukutsu area.

Place: Otaru Aquarium Parking area

Time: 7pm~

Access: Take a bus from the bus terminal (located in front of JR Otaru station) bound for Otaru aquarium. (Gate# 3, Bus# 10 or 11.) It takes about 30 minutes by bus. Please get off the last bus stop.

Some shows such as concert and portable shrine on the day from 5pm to 9 pm.

In addition, Herring mansion will be illuminated on the day until 9:30 pm.

Cleaning for forecourt

During the summer biggest festival "Otaru Ushio Matsuri", lots of stands were opened on forecourt in Canal Plaza.

So many people enjoyed Hokkaido's local foods, Otaru lacal beer, fresh seafood and fusion foods here.

Mr.Kodama (Otaru tourism association office staff) and Ms.Aki (Cleaning staff Canal plaza) cleaned the forecourt.

Haha, Mr.Kodama looks like a boy. He took off his shoes and enjoyed cold water.

Because recently, the temperature in over 30 degrees in Otaru.

It's said that still hot weather will continue for a while.

If you come to Otaru from New Chitose Airport and Sapporo by JR train, you'll enjoy beautiful views from the train window.

The train runs along the coastline.

I took this photo at Asari area.

This is one of my favorite sights in Otaru.

There are some beaches for swimming on the way to Otaru from Sapporo.

Asari, as well. You can reach the Asari beach by only 5 minutes walk from JR Asari station.

In these days, Otaru is sooo hot... So, many people enjoy swimming and BBQ at the beach.

This is "Ushio Wind Bell".

It's official goods of annual event, "Otaru Ushio Festival".

Every year, only one work(glass wind bell) is chosen from among glass studios in Otaru.

This is the champion glass wind bell of this year made by Ms. Chiaki Yamamoto. (belonging Otaru ADVANCE Club glass studio).

It's in quite rare and beautiful design, double glass.

and look at it carefully, it's really meticulous design.

This is Ushio Matsuri Festival's symbol. We sell her works at Canal Plaza for 1,500 yen and limited 300 bells.

I got a opportunity to take a cruiser.

Otaru has some spots to enjoy cruiser.

One of them is "Marine wave Otaru" located in Otaru Chikko area.

This area has huge shopping mall, seafood market and so on.

It'll be held fireworks display in summer at this area.

I went there with Mr. Kodama (Otaru tourism association office staff) and Mr. Eto (Tourist Information translator for Korean visitors).

Excited...

It took just 5 minutes by car from Canal plaza.

If you take a sightseeing bus from JR Otaru station, it'll take about 30 minutes, and it takes 7 minutes by JR train.

Visited "Otaru Marine Center House" first.

After passing through this main building, beautiful port view spread out before us.

The high building behind boats us the Hotel Grand Park Otaru and shopping mall named "Wing Bay Otaru".

To our surprise, a huge amusement park was built here 77 years ago.

But it's burned down 59 years ago.

Fishing @ Northern breakwater

Otaru has many good place for fishing.

I went to "Northern breakwater" yesterday with my friend.

Northern breakwater is located 30 minutes walk from JR Otaru station.

We enjoyed fishing in the morning time and have conversation with friendly local people.

We're beginners so, they taught us how to bait, throw and so on.

There were lots of people who were enjoying fishing too but everyone looked that they didn't get anything.

We couldn't get fishes at all too :

The 3rd Otaru Glass Market

You can enjoy exhibition of hand-picked glass works, sale and glass making experience.

Japanese Northern Flower "Hamanasu"

Hi!

Ms. Matsuhashi told me that beautiful flowers are in full bloom now.

The name of the flower is "Hamanasu" in Japanese and "Rugosa rose" in English.

You can see "Hamanasu" at only northern area in Japan.

Especially Hokkaido is famous region for "Hamanasu".

It's best season of "Hamanasu" now.

There are Hamanasu trees between Sankaku market and JR Otaru station.

It's lovely, isn't it??

Japanese traditional Snack

I'll introduce my favorite snack shop today.

The name of the shop is "Arare Midoriya".

This shop is located only 5 minutes walk from JR otaru station.

The building of this shop looks it has old atmosphere.

It has many kinds of traditional snacks named "Arare" or "Okaki".

Both of them are rice cracker.

Especially, I like them...↓↓:)

They're cute, aren't they??

They look Japanese old dolls. Actually, they are rice crackers as well.

Parts of their heads are beans and bodies are long rice crackers.

I got new leaflets yesterday.

"The 45th Otaru Ushio Festival".

It will be held on 29th to 31st of July.

Otaru becomes really crowded with a large number of people.

The parade of powerful portable shrine with lots of people who are in happi coat is a great spectacle.

Actually, everyone can join the parade of "Ushio Nerikomi".

"Ushio Nerikomi" is a dance parade, in which a lot of local men and women of all ages take part.

This parade will be held on 30th of July.

If your group consists of below 5 people, you'll be able to join it without prior application.

I would like you to enjoy "Otaru Ushio Festival"!!

Souvenir from a woman

Hi :)

Today, I'll tell you a grateful story.

I worked at Asakusa bridge tourist information a few days ago.

One woman visited us and asked about the way to go to Mt.Tengu.

She needed to take a bus but at the moment, she didn't have enough time to take a next bus from the closest bus stop.

I told her how to go to Mt.Tengu quickly and she rushed to the bus terminal.

She had to take the bus from the bus terminal but I thought she wasn't sure which bus stop she should get on from, because there's another bus stop in front the terminal.

So, I ran after her, but regrettably, she missed the bus and she decided to take a next bus which was one hour later.

I couldn't help her well, but a few hours later, she came back to out tourist information again!!

She said "I bought souvenirs to you guys :)"

She looked that she really enjoyed her staying at Mt.Tengu.

I was pleased about just her coming back.

That's why, I was more happy about her present.

We saw a poster saying "どらやき生キャラメル" (※Dorayaki with Raw caramel) so, we stopped at "Tanaka Sake brewry".

※Dorayaki...Japanese-style confectionery. Small bean paste between Japanese-style pancakes.

"Tanaka Sake Brewry" is located 15 minutes walk from JR Otaru station and it's long-established sake brewry where you can sample and purchase local sake, local wine, bean tea, confectionery made from sake and so on.

We chose Dorayaki with raw caramel cream.

We really enjoyed it :)

The day of our strolling was the middle of May.

The best season of Sakura (Cherry blossoms) in Otaru is from the begging to the middle of May.

Now, "Tengu Zakura" (located on the mountaintop of Mt.Tengu) is at its best.

At the end of the Otaru canal, there is a seafood market, named "Rinyu Morning Market".

This is the earliest market in Otaru, opened at 4 am and it has restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood.

We decided to have lunch here.

I ordered a grilled fish meal. (Bawl of rice topped with raw fishes, Sashimi, boiled and seasoned meal and so on.)

In front of North canal area, there is a park named "Unga kouen" (means Canal park).

About 20 minutes walk from JR Otaru station.

Local people enjoy spending their time as they please here.

The building on the back of a fountain is "Former Otaru Branch of Nihon Yusen".

This is one of Otaru's historical structures.

If you visit here, specialists of Otaru will guide you with interesting stories.

This retro bus is a tour bus in Otaru.

Everyday, it departs in front of JR Otaru station at 9:30am and goes around many sightseeing spots　with a guide in retro costumes. Adult: 3,000 JPY, Child: 1,900 JPY.

Lots of ships are moor at this area.

A seagull was taking a rest on the gas lamp.

This is North canal area as it was and my recommended spot to take pictures.

Hello, how are you?? :) I took a walk with Ms.Yoshida (my second Mom:-P) yesterday, so I'll show you some pictures today. We started our strolling from Canal plaza. (10 minutes walk from JR Otaru station.)

On the back of Canal plaza, there's a vivid colored restaurant named "Mangiare Takinami". In which, you can enjoy Mediterranean food lunch and which has a big lovely cherry tree in front of itself.

I will give you good information today.

From tomorrow, Golden week will start when there are four national holidays.

May 5th is one of the national holidays, named "Children's day".

Otaru quarium has great service for children on the day.

Children's admission fee become...FREE!! :) (Under 12years old children)

Many buses run from Chuo-bus Otaru station terminal located in front of Otaru station.

I recommend some shows of sea lions, dolphins, seals and penguins.

Please enjoy Otaru aquarium!!!

When I walked down toward to Otaru canal from Otaru station, I found a vernal plant.

This is butterbur scape.

It's coming out along the Former Temiya railway. (The 3rd oldest railway in Hokkaido.)

I've started working at Otaru tourism association from the May of the last year and when I was going home, I took this photo in a train 2 days later from joining the company.

One of my friends taught me that around this season, we can enjoy splendid sunset.

Do you know "Ankake Yakisoba"?

Talking of Otaru's gourmet, Sushi is the most famous food, but these days "Ankake Yakisoba" attracts attention. "Ankake Yakisoba" is fried noodle with thick starch sauce like this...↓↓

You can enjoy many kinds oｆ vegetables and seafood with fried noodle. It's quite popular and lots of restaurants (not only Chinese restaurants but also hotels, ramen shops and coffee shops) have this menu in Otaru. In addition, a interesting event will be held from tomorrow for 2 months named "Ankake Stamp Rally". Let's collect stamps at each restaurant and get meal ticket!! Term: 15th April ~ 15th June Present: Collect 5 stamps...500 yen meal ticket for 50 winners by lot. Collect all 9 stamps...3,000 yen meal ticket for 20 winners by lot. Tourist information center has stamp form↓↓

Today, an inspection party from Taiwan visited Otaru!!

They gave us wonderful messages. They hope that Hokkaido's tourism industry becomes cheerful as soon as possible.

We would like to do our best, thanks for coming to Otaru.

In addition, I got good chance to experience Japanese culture to welcome them.

That is...wearing Kimono.

Kimono is Japanese traditional clothes and you might think it's difficult to wear but there's nice shop in Otaru.

Name is "Otome no kimono" (乙女のきもの）.

This shop has many kinds of antique Kimono, little items, Japanese old bags, hair accessories and so on. They sell Kimono from 1,000 yen (about US$10) and has rental Kimono too.

Of course they help you to wear Kimono.

Would you like to stroll in Otaru wearing Kimono and feeling good old atmosphere of Otaru??

Hello, we made very useful guide for foreign tourists.

This is "Access Guide in Otaru".

It's mentioned that how to get on JR train, bus, cruise and hire bicycles in Otaru.

In addition, it shows bus stops and JR stations of four areas. (Mt.Tengu, Asarigawa hot spring, Shukutsu and Beaches.)

I drew some pictures myself. I would like you to see it :)

Hello, how are ya?

Otaru has many beauty spots of "Sakura" (Cherry blossoms).

I think you already know but, "Sakura" is Japanese national flower.

The best season to see Sakura in Otaru is from the begging to the middle of May.

Before this season, we have been making "Otaru Sakura Map" ourselves every year in the past, but this year, this map was changed and published a lot.

This map has eight areas information, but only in Japanese.

If you would like to visit these parks with this map, please visit our tourist information and ask staff. We will help you!!

When I walked at middle of Otaru city, I saw different sight from usual today. This river is "Myoken-river" which is located under the "Sushi-ya dori street". Usually this river flows calmly but in this season, the snows begun to melt and streamflow becomes fast. This is one of our spring... :)

Hello, it begun to heavy snow in Otaru again! I worked at JR Otaru station's tourist information yesterday, many trains were affected by heavy snow and avalanche. When I went out from Otaru station, I found a cute thing...

She was standing on the left side at the entrance.

Now, JR Otaru station is in remodeling construction.

That's why, there are fences and walls around station for the construction.

This postbox looks like nestling against the fence:)

The Doll's Festival

Do you know what day tomorrow in Japan??

Tomorrow will be "The doll's festival"!!

There are many Japanese dolls in Otaru now.

Because we are having a event named "Otaru Hina Meguri" (Tour dolls).

Lots of shops, restaurant museum...etc display Japanese dolls.

I'll give you information about "The doll's festival".

We call "The doll's festival" as "Hina-Matsuri" in Japanese.

The origin of "Hina-Marsuri" ascend to about 1,000 years ago.

Making dolls by Origami (the Japanese art of folding paper into attractive shapes.) was popular among peeress and children in those days and theu floated these dolls to hte waters making a wish for children's peace and health in the beginning of March.

This story triggered the birth of "Hina-Matsuri".

About 500～600　years ago, the date March 3rd has been established as "Hina-Matsuri" day and "Girl's Festival dolls" become common.

"Hina-Matsuri" was only in tokyo's custom about 400 years ago but 150 years ago, it spread to the whole country.

This event "Otaru Hina Meguri" in Otaru have stareted since 2008.

Local people in Otaru hope that we can tell our traditional culture and local lofe with "Hina-Matsuri".

Memories of Otaru Snow Light Path

Hello, it's been a long time...How are you? I'm soooo sorry, I haven't posted so long time... We had a event named "Otaru Snow Light Path" (Otaru Yukiakari no Michi) from 4th to 13th of February. I've made really lots of memories at this event and I've got many beautiful pictures. I'll show you some of them today.

After passing through the gate at JR Otaru station, some floating glass candles had been waited for three of us :)

We saw many snow statues at this event.

I got these photo at the top of Mt. Tengu.

Tengu means "Japanese long-nosed goblin" in Japanese.

Tengu might live at Mt. Tengu...

This view is the one of three biggest views in Hokkaido!

On the other day, we visited Asarigawa onsen area. (Otaru's hotspring area.)

This area had romantic mood with snow candles and so many tourists enjoyed taking pictures.

Wow!! We found a FOX!!

He looks he is waitng for food from tourists in front of the cafe. We had a talk with the master of the cafe at Asarigawa hotspring area. He said this fox lives around this cafe, so if you come to this cafe, you might see him. I joined this event as a volunteer staff as well. I sold message candles and wax balls.

Ummm...Yummy!! I was satisfied!!

Hi★

There are three ski resorts in Otaru.

Mt.Tengu ski resort, Asarigawa hot spring ski resort and Snow cruise ONZE.

I went to last one, ONZE to snowboard.

ONZE opens earliest every year in Otaru because they can make artificial snow.

That's why, Otaru people can enjoy skiing, snowboarding and winter activity even if it's at the beginning of November.

I went there by pick-up bus ↓↓

This bus runs anout every two hours from Sapporo.
